Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the first step in getting counseling or coaching?

Making that first contact with a therapist by telephone or respond to his/her email address. Your contact with the therapist is confidential and professional and should put an end to your suffering in silence with the burden of stress about your problem. Be sure to leave a confidential phone number where the therapist can contact you.

What happens once I am a counseling client/patient?

You can expect an experienced professional who is interested in listening to your concerns and in helping you develop a better understanding of them so that you may learn coping skills to help you deal more easily and effectively with your problems. Your counselor will take you seriously and is prepared to openly discuss anything you wish to discuss. Your counselor will be willing to answer some questions about himself/herself directly and honestly. Counselors have different beliefs about how people change, they also differ on how much talking they do in sessions, and whether they require you to do some “between session assignments,” as well as their focus of discussion. Your job as a client/patient is to ask questions, participate fully, and to be as open an honest as possible. Your session will be strictly confidential except under very unusual circumstances. Your counselor will openly discuss this with you. A session for Individual Counseling is typically the “50 minute hour.” Counseling sessions for groups vary between one hour to approximately 2 ½ hours depending on the type of group.

What are my responsibilities in counseling?

Probably your most important responsibility in counseling is to attend your regularly scheduled sessions, discuss with your counselor what is bothering you as openly and honestly as you can, and complete any between session assignments you may be asked to do. You are expected to call your counselor to cancel if you are unable to make it to a session, or you can be charged for the missed session. Most counseling will require you to “step out side of your comfort zone” and try different things or approaches. Let your counselor know when you feel that your problems have been resolved, as well as let your counselor know if you don’t feel like you are making any progress after several sessions.

What are some difficulties or problems I might have with counseling?

Deciding to seek counseling is the first step in change. Once an individual makes this decision, the mechanics for change are set in motion. In the process of changing the way you think, feel, or behave differently, you usually are required to try out new ways of doing things. A result of this can cause you to be sort of anxious or frustrated. In the course of counseling you may come to realize that things that you once only thought of as positive or negative may begin to be seen a bit differently. Pushing past what you have perceived in the past to be your limitations may also cause you some frustration at times, but with commitment and practice, you will find that you are able to stretch your limits and find new and exciting aspects of yourself.

How can I get the most benefit from counseling?

  • Be ready to focus on a specific problem or issue.
  • Be prepared for your sessions.
  • Attend your sessions and take an active part in them. Remember, “It’s My Journey!”
  • Complete your “Between Session Assignment,” and if you have questions on your assignment, discuss with your counselor.
  • Let your counselor know if you do not think you are being helped after several sessions.

What is counseling?

Counseling is any relationship in which one person is helping another person to better understand and solve a problem. Your professional counselor is different from the friends, family, teachers, and clergy who provide counseling, because of her extensive training in psychology and human behavior. She has a broad range of experience in developing “helping relationships” and working with many different situations.

What is the monetary cost of counseling?

Payment is due at time of service; whether it is your insurance co-pay or payment in full if you are paying completely out-of-pocket. You will need to check with your medical insurance to find out if you indeed have “behavioral health” coverage and what is the amount of your co-pay if any. You might also have a deductible that would be required to be paid prior to your insurance paying for any of your sessions. Once again, inquire to your specific insurance program. Insurance co-pays can have a variety of ranges, depending on your particular coverage. For example, some co-pays are as little as $10.00, where others may be as much as $40.00 per session. Dr. Landrum does not currently accept credit cards. Payments can be made by checks or cash.

Appointments

Initial appointments can be scheduled by calling SelfQuest Coaching and Consulting, Inc. Usually an appointment can be made for you within 48 hours for your first session. If you feel you need to be seen sooner, let the person scheduling the appointment know and every effort will be made to schedule you for the earliest appointment. It is imperative that you call us to cancel an appointment if you change your mind about attending. You will not need to worry about being embarrassed about canceling. When you're ready, you will reschedule. When individuals make appointments for intake sessions and simply do not attend and do not call to cancel, that takes up an hour that some one else could have been seen sooner.
